Women's Bar Closed

The gay women of Cleveland recently suffere a severe setback in social organisation, with the closing of the CHEZ MS, the downstairs bar at the CHANGE. The CHEZ MS had been opened in November of 1973 as a strictly women's bar. It lasted for almost exactly one year.

There were reportedly many problems between Kaye, the manager, and the owner, in acquiring needed facilities for the bar, such as stools, air-conditioning, etc. These were resolved as time went on, but the matter finally came to a close at 2 AM November 2nd. After the bars had closed, the owner informed everyone that they would not be returning the following evening, as the place was being closed permanently. It has been known for some time in the gay community here that the CHANGE was undergoing a financial strain. Hoever, according to Kaye, the receipts from the CHEZ MS on a weekend alone, were more than the total for the CHANGE for the whole week. Apparently, however, not enoughto keep the bars open.

Now there are only three big bars left in Cleveland. One of them, the 620, will not allow women inside, for any purpose, including a Gay Pride show. Twiggy's, while a fine bar, is rife with 'straight' men, who have a habit of making passes at females. That isn't so bad, but at times, they are even found in the women's rest room. Meaning to or not, still a hassle for lesbians. The Shaker Club, while it does permit women inside, has a reputation for hassling women for I.D.s. This seems to be the most poular spot for most of the women who still want to go out evenings. However, none of these has the security of being strictly for women, and they are still looking for another place of their own.

Rumor has it that sometime around the 20th of December will be the opening date for a new club but seeing is believing.
